Quebec offers some of the most generous senior tax credits in Canada. Many go unclaimed because seniors are unaware they qualify.
Federal Age Amount Credit
Canadians 65+ claim the Age Amount of $8,396 (2025) as a non-refundable credit, reducing federal tax by ~$1,259. Begins reducing when net income exceeds $42,335.
Quebec Age Credit
Quebec provides an additional age credit for residents 65+. For 2025, the Quebec base amount is $3,280, calculated on Schedule B.
Home Support for Seniors (Age 70+)
Quebec residents 70+ can claim 36% of eligible home support expenses: housekeeping, personal care, meal delivery, snow removal, security monitoring. This directly reduces Quebec tax payable by up to several thousand dollars annually.
Pension Income Credit
Eligible pension income (private pensions, RRIF, annuities — not CPP/QPP/OAS) qualifies for a federal pension credit of up to $2,000 × 15% = $300 federal tax reduction. Quebec has an equivalent credit.
Medical Expenses
Seniors typically have higher medical expenses. Keep receipts for prescriptions, dental, vision, hearing aids, physiotherapy, and medical travel. Claim net of 3% of net income or $2,759 (2025 federal threshold).
GIS for Low-Income Seniors
Guaranteed Income Supplement provides additional non-taxable monthly payments up to $1,086/month (2025). Must reapply annually by filing a tax return on time.
